Rambler Rodeo and Trade Fair takes over Tisdale this weekend

Apr 4, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The long-running Tisdale Rambler Rodeo and trade fair will take place at the RECplex this weekend.

The senior hockey club started the fundraising event nearly 30 years ago, making the rodeo one of the province’s longest running events sanctioned by the Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA). The rodeo has expanded over the years, adding a trade show, horse pulls, barrel racing, and cabarets on both Friday and Saturday nights. Organizer Neil Elmslie said they get help from many local groups when putting on the event.

“We have lots of quality sponsors from the area and lots of people that help us every year, but at the core of it all, it’s a fundraiser ran by the hockey club,” Elmslie said.

Participants from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta attend the rodeo to compete, Elmslie said, as it’s one of the first events on the CCA’s yearly calendar. The rodeo begins Friday at 7 p.m., barrel racing starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and the horse pull begins at 1 p.m. Elmslie said people from across the Northeast region attend the event every year, which is important because it’s the team’s only fundraiser.

“Some years you have good years, some years we are down, but it’s the only fundraiser we have,” he said. “All our eggs are in one basket.”

The trade fair will take place at the curling rink from 12 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the rodeo and dances are available at Hi-Fashion in Tisdale or at the door of the events. Elmslie said the weekend is not only a highlight for the town, but the rodeo and fair have grown into a marquee event for the Northeast.

“I believe it’s one of the largest events that happens in the region every year,” he said. “We hope to have a real good turnout.”
