Melfort care home under visitor restriction due to illness

A local care home is under a visitor restriction.

Nirvana Pioneer Villa in Melfort is closed from visitors due to an unidentified gastrointestinal illness outbreak.

“Precautions have been put in place to help contain and minimize the spread of the infection. Visitors to Nirvana Pioneer Villa are being restricted until further notice, with the exception of those visiting residents that are extremely ill. Individuals may check with the facility if they have any questions or concerns,” Saskatchewan Health Authority spokesperson Doug Dahl said in a news release.

People should check with the facility prior to visiting.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding the public and staff of the importance of proper hand washing to prevent the spread of viruses.

“Individuals may carry a virus without being symptomatic and can transfer it to others. We want to remind the public and staff of the importance of proper hand washing,” the news release said. “Washing hands with hand pump wash for at least 24 to 30 seconds is one of the most effective means of preventing the spread of communicable diseases.”
