Mustangs battle Broncos in home and home, hold Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday

Dec 14, 2018 | 7:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are getting ready for a big weekend in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Mustangs will take on the Humboldt Broncos this weekend in a home and home set. Both teams are near the top of the SJHL standings with the Mustangs sitting second in the Sherwood Division with 44 points. Humboldt is first place in the Global Ag Risk Solutions Division with 45 points, just two points up on the Kindersley Klippers. After a 5-4 overtime loss on Tuesday to the Yorkton Terriers, Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said the next stretch for the team will be a challenge.

“I think these next four games will be a lot of fun,” Meyers said. “I think the boys will be ready for that. Humboldt this Friday, and Saturday and then a week after, we’ve got Nipawin, Nipawin, which we’re excited to get back to playing some of these teams.”

The Mustangs and Broncos have only met once this season with Melfort coming out on top 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 23.

Not only will the weekend feature the two rivals go head to head, but the game on Saturday, Dec 15, will be the Mustangs Teddy Bear Toss game. Director of Marketing, Jaret Schneider said it’s a big night for everyone involved.

“It’s something that we do, really look forward to,” Schneider told northeastNOW. “It’s a lot of fun, the fans come out, they really support the Mustangs on that night and they really support the youth of our community which is the great part about it.”

Once the Mustangs score their first goal of the game, fans are asked to litter the ice with teddy bears, and stuffed animals. Last year, almost 400 stuffed animals were tossed onto the ice at the Northern Lights Palace. The teddy bears thrown onto the ice go to the Salvation Army in Melfort.

Not only will Saturday’s game be the Mustangs Teddy Bear Toss game, but Rod Pederson will be in Melfort prior to the game. Pederson is doing a book signing at the Northern Lights Palace. It is part of Pederson’s tour to promote the SJHL’s 50th Anniversary Book; Heart and Soul of the SJHL. Pederson compiled and produced the book that is being sold online, and at souvenir booths. Schneider said they are fortunate to have Pederson coming.

“It really worked out nice for us,” Schneider said. “We got a hold of Rod and said ‘Hey, would you come and do a book signing?’ and lucky for us, he’s going to be here [Saturday] to do his book signing in the Palace before game time, it’ll be 5 to 7 p.m. roughly, probably bleed a little bit into the first period.”

The SJHL announced the book earlier in the week and it features stories, not only from the current 12 teams, but the former teams from the league as well.
