The Melfort Food Bank was the recipient of a big donation on Thursday, Dec 13.

The grade seven students at Kinistino School just wrapped up a unit on making the world a better place, and recognizing social issues, according to teacher Nicole Webb. She said the donation was part of their final project.

“They had to organize, and run their own food drive. So, I did pretty much nothing. Everything from getting the boxes together, writing announcements, posters, speeches to the staff and the kids, it was all them,” Webb said.

She added that the kid’s eyes “lit up” when they saw how much food they were able to donate, and that “they were going to help so many people.”

As a result of the food drive, 449 pounds of food was given to the Melfort Food Bank. Manager of the food bank, Elmer Barks said it was more special because it was student driven.

“It’s a lot different if you’ve got kids doing it,” Barks told northeastNOW. “It’s a lot better because they learn something else too. They’re helping other people out.”

Barks said the nearly 500 pounds of donations will really help at this time of year.

“It means a lot of families they won’t be starving or anything like that,” Barks said.

The students also stuck around the food bank for a while to help organize, and help in any way they could.

The Christmas season is a busy one for the food bank, and Barks said they are getting a good amount of donations, but they are always in need of more.

“Right now, it’s canned goods stuff and meat mostly,” Barks said.
