Northeast seniors receive holiday cheer with poinsettias

Dec 14, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Christmas may still be a few weeks away, although it hasn’t stopped the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group (JPBG) to provide some holiday cheer halfway through December.

Nearly 480 poinsettias were delivered to seniors in the northeast region by Power 99. It’s the fourth straight year Power99 gave out the Christmas-themed plants throughout the area.

Sask Government & General Employees Union (SGEU) Health, who provides home care for seniors in the northeast area, was more than willing to get on board with the poinsettia giving.

“We thought that it would be a good way of giving back to the communities we serve and bring a little bit of holiday cheer to people in the long-term care areas,” SGEU Health Vice President Bonnie Erickson said.

Senior care facilities such as Parkland Place in Melfort typically see a growth in visitors during the holiday season, however some seniors aren’t as fortunate to have family remaining in the area.

Tanya Ingham, the nurse manager for Parkland Place, told northeastNOW a visit and even a small gift can help lighten the mood during the holidays.

“I think it always increases the spirit of Christmas,” Ingham said. “It increases their mood, makes them feel a little better.”
