Work continues on new recreation complex in Wynyard

Work continues in Wynyard at the site of their new recreation complex.

Chief Administrative Officer Jason Chorneyko said things are going well with the project.

“It’s really starting to take shape,” Chorneyko told northeastNOW. “I talked to the contractor, and the foreman out there and he said they are still on schedule so we’re looking somewhere late May, early June completion date.”

He said the mezzanine continues to take shape, and most of the windows are installed. Chorneyko also added that the project still remains on budget, somewhat, after a few changes.

“We didn’t realize in the original plans, the parking lot area, I think they only had like 30 per cent to 40 per cent of that was going to be properly based so that at some point we can pave over it. So, we decided to go ahead and get that all done right now.”

When the complex does open, it will be ready for the 2019/2020 hockey and skating seasons, with the golf course following after.

“The golf course will operate in its current location with its current numbering of holes for this upcoming season,” Chorneyko said. “Then the next season, the golf club will move to the new facility, and they’re going to have to re-number the holes. Number nine will become number one and then it will just carry on from there.”

As for the old rink, Chorneyko said it will stay for the time being.

“The old rink will stick around for a while.” He said. “I don’t know if it will have any use, except to hold our swimming pool solar heating panels. There’s no immediate plan to tear it down. I’m assuming at some point in time it will come down. There is a reason that we are building a new rink, and it’s that this one was starting to show its age structurally.”

The current rink is almost 70 years old.
